This is a great gig. The band is really developing - on this gig we regularly get into "the zone," where we feel like something really special is happening with the music. The response of the staff and the clientele has been great. The gig has been extended due to the response we've been getting and because the staff really digs the band.
I want to give special thanks here to Naso Eleftheriadis, owner of Nefeli Cafe (on Euclid Avenue by the UC Berkeley campus) and a waiter at Prima, for helping me get this gig. Naso used to own Odyssia in Berkeley, where I used to play with 3 Go T. Naso recommended us to Prima, and was invaluable in our landing this gig. Thanks, Naso! We wouldn't have the gig without you!
Greg Sankovich is on piano and Kevin Mummey is on drums. Come check us out if you haven't heard us.
Saturday, May 1, 6:30 PM to 8 PM - note time change

Adventure Cat Cruise
http://www.adventurecat.com/
Pier 39, J dock
San Francisco, CAThis is an open-to-the-public evening cruise on the Adventure Cat II, a 65 foot long catamaran. It's HUGE - big enough to fit a jazz trio in the cabin. We played a private party on this boat last summer and had a great time. These guys really have their stuff together. This is a great way to tour the bay.
Hal Richards will be on woodwinds and Saul Kaye on guitar. By the way, Saul leads his own jazz and rock bands and is a good egg. You can learn more at http://www.saulkaye.com
Sunday, May 2, 5:30 to 7:30 PM
Love Motel - jazz
Rasselas
1534 Fillmore near Geary
San Francisco, CA
http://www.rasselasjazzclub.com/Love Motel again has a steady gig at the Fillmore Rasselas with "Love Motel," a group named after a Bill Frisell tune. I played with Love Motel several times at the old, now closed, Rasselas on California and Divisadero. Guitarist Jeff Hirano leads the band. We were in Section 8 Project, a local jazz band. I really like Jeff Hirano's tone and ideas - he plays with effects, frequently uses a Steinberger guitar rather than a fat jazz box, and is generally much more of a modernist in his playing. On drums is Tim Vaughan, a fine drummer. Trumpeter Dave Scott is normally on the gig but there will be the occasional guest instrumentalist. We will also have various people sitting in.
Please note this is an early gig - you can come see us and still get a good's sleep for the work week. There is easy street parking or at Safeway (across Fillmore from the Fillmore Auditorium). The new Rasselas is a stylish place with a much more modern vibe than the old Rasselas.

We are back at Enrico's. I'll be leading my trio with Greg Sankovich on piano and Kevin Mummey on drums. This is the same trio that has been getting such a good response at Prima in Walnut Creek. Enrico's is a classic North Beach joint. It's also close to City Lights bookstore (one of the best bookstores ever, period) and a variety of other cafes (including the famed Caffe Trieste), restaurants, and strip clubs.
At present this is our final scheduled gig at Enrico's, although we hope to be back for more. If you can come and show your support it would really be appreciated.

This is a lovely old bar and grill, founded 1908. It's right across from the Palace Hotel and is right by the Montgomery Street BART station. It's an easy place to have an after-work drink if you work downtown.

This week Andy Ostwald is on piano. I really enjoy playing with Andy - Greg Sankovich is the regular pianist on the gig, but Andy does an excellent job subbing for Greg. He's an excellent player, fits the music really well, and is a great guy.

The Albatross (aka The Bird) has been around since 1964. Current owners Wendy Halambeck and Linda Zsilavetz did a wonderful job of revitalizing the place without losing the charm it had. There are lots of board games available, lots of room for darts, a nice fireplace in the back, and food. It's a very friendly comfortable place. They now have a hard liquor license, so it is a great place to have a single malt scotch or the like.
Lincoln Adler will be on soprano and tenor sax. This will be Lincoln's second appearance with the band. Greg Sankovich will be on keyboards, with Randy Odell on drums. This band will be a lot of fun. Lincoln's a fine jazz player who really likes to dig into a tune. He also plays with Greg Sankovich in the funk band Domino Theory.
The Albatross also has Jeremy, one of the coolest doormen you will come across. He's a great doorman - friendly without sucking up, keeps a good vibe happening in front of the club, and defuses problems. He's also a substitute teacher, and I've heard from other teachers that he's a very good one.

Shanghai 1930
http://www.shanghai1930.com/
133 Steuart Street, San Francisco, CA
San Francisco, CAI've played at Shanghai 1930 many times in the past with Lorna K. This is the first time I've played here leading my own group. We'll have our piano trio - the same one we've been featuring at Prima and at Enrico's. Shanghai 1930 is a beautiful restaurant - it's got a lovely bar and a beautiful restaurant. The food is top-notch Chinese food and differs from what you get in most Chinese restaurants.
