Calendar - Upcoming Gigs

NOTE: Gigs are often added, canceled, or rescheduled at the last minute. You are welcome to call or e-mail me to confirm performance dates and times. The gigs listed below are an incomplete list and do not include private engagements.

Wednesday, Mar. 31, 5:30 PM to 8:30 PM

Kurt Ribak - original jazz
House of Shields
39 New Montgomery (South of Market, between 2nd and 3rd
Streets)
San Francisco, CA

We're back at Shields.  Shields is close to the Montgomery St. BART station and is right across from the Palace Hotel.  We will perform as a trio featuring Robin Lewis on guitar and Randy Odell on drums.

Friday, April 2, 7:00 to 10:00 PM

Kurt Ribak Trio - Original jazz
Prima Ristorante
http://www.primaristorante.com/
1522 N. Main Street, Walnut Creek, CA
Every Friday, 7:00 PM to 10:00 PM
All ages

This is a great gig. The band is really developing - on this gig we regularly get into "the zone," where we feel like something really special is happening with the music. The response of the staff and the clientele has been great.

The gig has been extended due to the response we've been getting and because the staff really digs the band.

I want to give special thanks here to Naso Eleftheriadis, owner of Nefeli Cafe (on Euclid Avenue by the UC Berkeley campus) and a waiter at Prima, for helping me get this gig. Naso used to own Odyssia in Berkeley, where I used to play with 3 Go T. Naso recommended us to Prima, and was invaluable in our landing this gig. Thanks, Naso! We wouldn't have the gig without you!

This week Andy Ostwald is on piano and my old buddy Randy Odell is on drums.  Come check us out if you haven't heard us.

Saturday, April 3, 5 PM to 8 PM

Kurt Ribak - original jazz
Adventure Cat Cruise
http://www.adventurecat.com/
Pier 39, J dock
San Francisco, CA

This is an open-to-the-public evening cruise on the Adventure Cat II, a 65 foot long catamaran. It's HUGE - big enough to fit a jazz trio in the cabin. We played a private party on this boat last summer and had a great time. These guys really have their stuff together. Come on down and check it out!

Wednesday, April 7, 6:00 to 9:00 PM

Kurt Ribak Trio - Original jazz
Cato's Ale House
http://www.mrcato.com/
3891 Piedmont Ave.
Oakland, CA
510-655-3349 all ages
no cover

We played at Cato's for the first time in many months in March.  They liked us and asked us back.  Cato's is a beer and wine place with a lot of good bar grub as well. Their beer selection is excellent, and you can bring your kids if you wish.

Dave Cassini will be on vibes and Lincoln Adler, a really fine player, will be on woodwinds.

Thursday, April 8, 7:00 to 10:00 PM

40th Anniversary Party! Thursday April 8th, 7 to10 PM Featuring a Buffet, Prize Drawing, Free Pool & Darts, Old-Time Beers at Old-Time Prices, and Live Music by Bluegrass Intentions. Free Admission. Go here for a little background. We won't be playing this date, but I plan to attend.

Enrico's Sidewalk Cafe
http://www.enricossidewalkcafe.com
504 Broadway at Kearny,
San Francisco, CA 94113
415-982-6223

We are back at Enrico's. I'll be leading my trio with Greg Sankovich on piano. Enrico's is a classic North Beach joint. It's also close to City Lights bookstore (one of the best bookstores ever, period) and a variety of other cafes, restaurants, and strip clubs.

Thursday, April 15, 7:00 to 10:00 PM

Lorna K (jazz vocals and French songs)
Cafe de la Presse
352 Bush near Grant Ave.
San Francisco, CA
415-398-2680
All ages
no cover
http://www.themenupage.com/cafedelapresse.html
http://www.cafedelapresse.com

Lorna has played regularly at Cafe de la Presse over the years. It's the best place in town to get a copy of Paris-Match or other foreign magazines and have anything from a drink at the bar to a full meal in the restaurant part. There is also a cafe at the site. The joint is across the street from the French Consulate General.

I believe guitarist Robin Lewis and I will be backing Lorna.  Robin also plays in my band - we play well together.

Sunday, April 18, 5:30 to 7:30 PM

Love Motel - jazz Rasselas
1534 Fillmore near Geary
San Francisco, CA
http://www.rasselasjazzclub.com/

Love Motel again has a steady gig at the Fillmore Rasselas with "Love Motel," a group named after a Bill Frisell tune. I played with Love Motel several times at the old, now closed, Rasselas on California and Divisadero. This band is led by Jeff Hirano, the guitarist in Section 8 Project, a jazz band I was in. I really like Jeff Hirano's tone and ideas - he plays with effects, frequently uses a Steinberger guitar rather than a fat jazz box, and is generally much more of a modernist in his playing. On drums is Tim Vaughan, a fine drummer. Trumpeter Dave Scott is normally on the gig but there will be the occasional guest instrumentalist.  We will also have various people sitting in.

Please note this is an early gig - you can come see us and still get a good's sleep for the work week. There is easy street parking or at Safeway (across Fillmore from the Fillmore Auditorium). The new Rasselas is a stylish place with a much more modern vibe than the old Rasselas.

Tuesday, Apr. 20, 5:30 PM to 8:30 PM

Lorna K and the Lorna K Kombeau - vocal jazz
House of Shields
39 New Montgomery
(South of Market, between 2nd and 3rd Streets)
San Francisco, CA
no cover
21 and over

House of Shields has re-re-opened, and Lorna K is back. This is a lovely old bar and grill, founded 1908.  It's right across from the Palace Hotel and is right by the Montgomery Street BART station.  It's an easy place to have an after-work drink if you work downtown.

Kurt Ribak - original jazz
The Albatross
1822 San Pablo Avenue (two blocks north of University, west
side of the street)
Berkeley, CA 94710
510-843-2473 (510-THE-BIRD)
http://www.albatrosspub.com/
21 and over
$3.00 Cover charge

The Albatross (aka The Bird) has been around since 1964. Current owners Wendy Halambeck and Linda Zsilavetz did a wonderful job of revitalizing the place without losing the charm it had. There are lots of board games available, lots of room for darts, a nice fireplace in the back, and food. It's a very friendly comfortable place. They now have a hard liquor license, so it is a great place to have a single malt scotch or the like.

Also - 40th Anniversary Party!

Thanks, and please feel free to say hi if you come to a gig!
