Kurt Ribak - April 2005 Gigs

Kurt Ribak - bassist

April 2005 Gigs

The CD is finally here!

You've heard me say a recording of the Kurt Ribak Trio is in the pipeline for about a year now. It's here at long last. You can buy it online at CDBaby and at Musicians Union Local 6. If you want to order it from Local 6 it's $12.00 for the CD plus $2.00 per item shipped - in other words, it'll cost $14.00 for one CD, $28.00 for two CDs and so on. It's slightly cheaper to get the CD from the Union but they only take checks - no credit cards. If you get the CD from the Union I also get the entire $12.00 - CDbaby takes a cut when they sell it.

Please mail your order to us along with your check made out to:
Musicians Union Local 6
116 Ninth Street, San Francisco, CA 94103

The Union says... "Your order will be filled immediately and sent to you by return mail. If you have any questions, please email us at info@afm6.org or call (415) 575-0777."

You can also get the CD directly from me at gigs. Cash only, please.

E-mail me with any questions.

Wednesday, March 30, 6:00 to 9:00 PM - and the last Wednesday of every month

Kurt Ribak Trio - Original jazz
Cato's Ale House

http://www.mrcato.com/
3891 Piedmont Ave.
Oakland, CA
510-655-3349 all ages
no cover

We play the last Wednesday of every month. Cato's is a beer and wine place with a lot of good bar grub as well. Their beer selection is excellent, and you can bring your kids if you wish. Hal Richards will be on woodwinds.

Friday, April 1, 7:00 to 10:00 PM Kurt Ribak Trio - Original jazz
Prima Ristorante
http://www.primaristorante.com/
1522 N. Main Street, Walnut Creek, CA
Every Friday, 7:00 PM to 10:00 PM
All ages

This is a great gig. The band is really developing - on this gig we regularly get into "the zone," where we feel like something really special is happening with the music. Greg Sankovich is on piano and Kevin Mummey is on drums. This is a top-notch restaurant and is especially known for their wine selection.

Sun., April 3, 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM Kurt Ribak Trio - Original jazz
Chaya Brasserie
http://www.thechaya.com/
location & info

132 The Embarcadero
San Francisco, CA 94105
(415) 777-8688

Chaya is known for its "Japanese-inspired French cuisine." The food and service are outstanding, they have some very nice wines, and they have some great views of the Bay Bridge. The trio will be me on bass, Greg Sankovich on keyboards, and Tim Solook on drums.

Come check us out - there's not much other jazz happening on a Sunday night, and this is an interesting new version of my band. At Chaya we play a harder-hitting, more driving style than at Prima. Between that and the electronic keyboards Greg brings to Chaya (they have no piano), the band sounds very different here.

Tuesday, April 5, 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM

Lorna K - classic jazz vocals
House of Shields
39 New Montgomery
(South of Market, between 2nd and 3rd Streets)
San Francisco, CA
no cover
21 and over

This is a lovely old bar and grill, founded 1908. It's right across from the Palace Hotel and is right by the Montgomery Street BART station. It's an easy place to have an after-work drink if you work downtown. Lorna has been trying out some very different arrangements. If you haven't heard her in a while, you might want to give her a fresh listen. Michael Groh is on electric guitar, and is dropping a lot of rock and blues licks into Lorna's material.

Sunday, April 10, 5:30 to 7:30 PM

Love Motel - jazz
Rasselas
1534 Fillmore near Geary
San Francisco, CA
http://www.rasselasjazzclub.com/

Love Motel is back playing every Sunday at the Fillmore Rasselas. I played with Love Motel several times at the old, now closed, Rasselas on California and Divisadero. This band is led by guitarist Jeff Hirano. We played together in Section 8 Project, a local jazz band. I really like Jeff Hirano's tone and ideas - he plays with effects, frequently uses a Steinberger guitar rather than a fat jazz box, and is generally much more of a modernist in his playing. On drums is Tim Vaughan, a fine drummer. We will also have various people sitting in.

Wed., April 13, 7:00 PM to 11:00 PM
Lorna K - jazz vocals
Shanghai 1930
http://www.shanghai1930.com/
133 Steuart Street, San Francisco, CA
San Francisco, CA

I've played at Shanghai 1930 many times in the past with Lorna K. Greg Sankovich, the regular pianist in my group, will be with us.

Shanghai 1930 is a beautiful restaurant. The food is top-notch Chinese food and differs from what you get in most Chinese restaurants.

Friday, April 15, 7:00 to 10:00 PM Kurt Ribak Trio - Original jazz
Prima Ristorante
http://www.primaristorante.com/
1522 N. Main Street, Walnut Creek, CA
Every Friday, 7:00 PM to 10:00 PM
All ages

This is a great gig. The band is really developing - on this gig we regularly get into "the zone," where we feel like something really special is happening with the music. Andy Ostwald will be on piano and Kevin Mummey on drums. Andy has a lyrical style reminiscent of Keith Jarett, with some occasional flashes of Bud Powell as well.

Greg Sankovich will be on piano, with Kevin Mummey on drums - the usual suspects on these gigs. If you haven't heard this lineup you should really check it out - we're getting into some very interesting musical territory.

Saturday, April 30, 8:00 to 11:00 PM

Kurt Ribak Band - Original jazz
George Kaye's
4044 Broadway - Broadway at 41st
Oakland, CA
510-547-9374
8 PM to 11 PM
21 and over - no cover

This is a really cool dive bar in Oakland. Owner/bartender/scholar/pilot/bon vivant David Biddle will be presiding. The regulars include doctors, nurses, lawyers, musicians, graduate students, dancers, artists, street people, cab drivers, and mechanics. You may also see dogs wandering about. Some of the artists are very good indeed, by the way, although the quality of art on display varies. It's the kind of bar where you go for more than just drinks - I've bought Christmas trees there, borrowed books, bought pieces of art from the creators and made new friends, as well as purchased a steady supply of scotch. Heck, it's such a good bar that non-smokers (like me) and even non-drinkers hang out there because it's a real neighborhood bar with a lot of interesting regulars.

Please note - this is an owner-operated bar that allows smoking. It is the only place I play that allows smoking. If you want a drink and a smoke, this is your place. If you really don't want to be around that, then please come to one of my other gigs instead.

If you want to be at a good old-fashioned lively bar, this is the place. I was there one night and the bar was on fire and a young woman did a dance on the bar and an unsolicited lapdance for a patron. So it's that kind of place. At least, it can be. The band will be me, Greg Sankovich on keyboards, and drummer TBA.

other upcoming gigs

Sat., May 14, 9:30 PM to 12:30 AM

Kurt Ribak - original jazz
The Albatross
1822 San Pablo Avenue (two blocks north of University, west side of the street)
Berkeley, CA 94710
510-843-2473 (510-THE-BIRD)
http://www.albatrosspub.com/
21 and over
$3.00 Cover charge

The Albatross (aka The Bird) has been around since 1964. Current owners Wendy Halambeck and Linda Zsilavetz did a wonderful job of revitalizing the place without losing the charm it had. There are lots of board games available, lots of room for darts, a nice fireplace in the back, and food. It's a very friendly comfortable place. They now have a hard liquor license, so it is a great place to have a single malt scotch or the like.

Wed., May 25, 1:00 PM
Kurt Ribak - radio interview - KCSM-FM 91.1

I will be doing a radio interview with Chris Cortez. We will be play the Kurt Ribak Trio CD and discuss upcoming gigs.

Below are a couple of recent photos of the band, including Randy, Johannes, and Greg.
