Today I went to the Family Law Court to check on a divorce case to see if the subject had a history of domestic violence. After I passed the metal detector I noticed in a cubicle a blond woman holding a small girl. They were sitting very still, and looked like they were going to stay there a while.

I went into the court to check my file and left. On the way out, I glanced at the cubicle where the mother and child had been. The two were gone. I wondered what had been were waiting for. As I stepped out onto the street, I saw a tiny blonde girl loaded into the child's seat of a Sheriff's Wagoneer. A fortyish Sheriff muttered to herself, "stupid." The little girl looked sad, confused, and frightened. I wondered what was going through her mind, and thought how hard it must be for her to be loaded into a police car and taken to some county building and handled by strangers. As I looked to the left, I saw a blond woman in handcuffs being led into another car, and I realized where the mother and child had gone.
