Profile and bio

Michael Burman, the KCSM-FM announcer, wrote a nice profile of Kurt and the Kurt Ribak Trio CD and personnel. We've also uploaded bios of Kurt, Greg Sankovich, and Tim Solook.

To everyone who saw us at the Fillmore Jazz Festival on July 3rd.... thanks so much. You were an amazing audience. You were positive, you were attentive. You genuinely were a wonderful audience to play for. Thanks so much for being there and letting us play for you.

3891 Piedmont Ave.

Oakland, CA
510-655-3349

We play the last Wednesday of every month. Cato's is a beer and wine place with a lot of good bar grub as well. Their beer selection is excellent, and you can bring your kids if you wish. Hal Richards will be on woodwinds.

Friday, July 1, 7:00 to 10:00 PM - and every Friday
Kurt Ribak Trio - Original jazz
Prima Ristorante
http://www.primaristorante.com/
1522 N. Main Street, Walnut Creek, CA
Every Friday, 7:00 PM to 10:00 PM
All ages

This is a great gig. The band is really developing - on this gig we regularly get into "the zone," where we feel like something really special is happening with the music. Greg Sankovich will be on piano, with Kevin Mummey on drums - the usual suspects on these gigs. If you haven't heard this lineup you should really check it out - we're getting into some very interesting musical territory.

We will be celebrating our second anniversary at Prima July 8. It's been a great gig for us. If you've meant to come and haven't, please do so. No gig lasts forever.

Tip - to best hear the band you should have drinks in the bar or make a dinner reservation in the bar.

Sun., July 3, 2:00 PM to 3:30 PM - note revised time

Kurt Ribak Trio - Original Jazz
Fillmore Jazz Festival
http://www.fillmorejazzfestival.com/
California Stage
Fillmore Street between California and Pine - note revised location
San Francisco, CA
Free admission

Woohoo! The Kurt Ribak Trio is playing the Fillmore Jazz Festival. This is billed as the largest free jazz festival on the West Coast. This is the first time the Trio has played the Fillmore Jazz Festival, altough I played here in the past. Greg Sankovich will be on keyboards, with Tim Solook on drums. Playing the same day are woodwinds man Fil Lorenz and his big soul-jazz band as well as Hammond B-3 legend Dr. Lonnie Smith AKA "The Turbanator'" as my buddy Jake likes to call him. Realistic Orchestra will be on right after us on the same stage and they too are definitely worth hearing. Earier in the day will be the local jazz group Palindrome, who should be well worth hearing.

Sun., July 3, 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM - and the first Sunday of every month
Kurt Ribak Trio - Original jazz
Chaya Brasserie
http://www.thechaya.com/
location & info

132 The Embarcadero
San Francisco, CA 94105
(415) 777-8688

Chaya is known for its "Japanese-inspired French cuisine." The food and service are outstanding, they have some very nice wines, and they have some great views of the Bay Bridge. The trio will be me on bass, Greg Sankovich on keyboards, and Tim Solook on drums.

Come check us out - there's not much other jazz happening on a Sunday night, and this is an interesting new version of my band. At Chaya we play a harder-hitting, more driving style than at Prima. Between that and the electronic keyboards Greg brings to Chaya (they have no piano), the band sounds very different here.

Tuesday, July 5, 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM
Lorna K - jazz vocals
House of Shields
39 New Montgomery
(South of Market, between 2nd and 3rd Streets)
San Francisco, CA
no cover
21 and over

This is a lovely old bar and grill, founded 1908. It's right across from the Palace Hotel and is right by the Montgomery Street BART station. It's an easy place to have an after-work drink if you work downtown. Lorna has been trying out some very different arrangements. If you haven't heard her in a while, you might want to give her a fresh listen. Michael Groh is on electric guitar, and is dropping a lot of rock and blues licks into Lorna's material.

Tuesday, July 5, 9:00 PM to 11:30 PM
Alex Walsh - original pop
Ireland's 32
3920 Geary Blvd, San Francisco, 94118
(415) 386-6173
no cover
21 and over

I played on a CD of Alex's songs a couple of years ago. Alex's writing is something like a blend of the Replacements and Mott the Hoople. This will be a full band - Alex will be playing his song as a solo act and with a full band that night.

Friday, July 8, 7:00 to 10:00 PM - and every Friday

Down Home Music
10341 San Pablo Avenue
El Cerrito, CA 94530

This is a CD promotion gig. Greg Sankovich will be on keyboards and Tim Solook on drums - same as on the CD. Down Home Music is one of my very favorite record stores, and I am glad to say they are carrying the Kurt Ribak Trio CD.

San Francisco, CA

I've played at Shanghai 1930 many times in the past with Lorna K. Greg Sankovich, the regular pianist in my group, will be with us.

Shanghai 1930 is a beautiful restaurant. The food is top-notch Chinese food and differs from what you get in most Chinese restaurants.

Saturday, July 23 - BLUPOINTE - 11am - 2pm - NOTE EARLY TIME
Lorna K and her Kombeau - vocal jazz and French cabaret music
239 Kearny @ Bush, SF

I am quoting Miss Lorna K here... "French music outdoors in charming Claude Lane, with Kurt Ribak on bass and Big Lou on accordion. Ambiance, ambiance..." This will be right down the alley from Claude Lane. This is a new bistro and raw bar. More info at citysearch.com
